FAQ

WHAT IS HYALURONIC ACID (HA)?

It is a compound found naturally in our bodies which has many functions but particularly aids hydration in the skin and is a key player is signs of aging. It works by attracting molecules of water resulting in hydrated, plump and more youthful looking skin.

Dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid of different densities which are injected into the skin to help replace volume, improve skin hydration and reduce signs of aging.

HOW LONG DO DERMAL FILLERS LAST?

Longevity of your filler varies vastly between patients, however a general rule is between 6 to 18 months depending on filler used and area treated. Please note this is not a guarantee. Areas that are more mobile, for example the lips, will break down filler more quickly. Those less mobile like the nose may last longer up to 18 months. Other factors which may reduce how long your fillers last include active exercise regimes, increased sun exposure, heat therapies like sauna/steam, smoking, your metabolism and past medical history.

WHAT AFTERCARE ADVICE DO YOU GIVE?

With dermal fillers you can usually return to your normal activities immediately after your appointment. As mentioned you may have some pain, swelling and bruising, these can be reduced by applying cold compressed to the area and taking simple pain relief. We do not advised massaging the treated area as the product will still be soft for at least 24 hours. Our general aftercare advice includes:

  • Avoid touching the skin and applying make up for at least 4 hours to reduce the risk of infection

  • Avoid vigorous exercise for 24 hours after

  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before and after treatments as this can increase risk of bleeding and bruising

  • Remain upright for 4 hours and sleep on your back where possible to avoid moving the product

  • You may wash your face lightly in the evening after treatment and apply your skincare , however be aware actives like retinol and vit C can irritate your skin so you wish may to avoid

  • Finally always feel comfortable to contact Dr Diane if you have any worries after your treatment and arrange a complimentary review appointment

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?

As with any medical treatment there is a possibility of side effects, although most of these are very rare. HA is found natural in the body and so the risk of reaction is low.

As a needle is used you may experience bruising, bleeding, pain and swelling in the area treated. At times you may not be happy with the outcome of your treatment due to the formation of lumps or asymmetry, in this case always contact us for a review. Other more serious side effects may occur, but as doctors we are highly trained to recognise these and act quickly. These include infection, allergic reaction, blockage of blood vessels and blindness. They will always be discussed at length in your appointments and Dr Diane is always available to support you if you are concerned after your procedure.

We understand this all sounds scary but please note these are rare. We work in a safe, clean environment with access to all emergency medicines. To reduce risks of infection we use an aseptic non-touch technique used in hospitals and double sterilise the skin prior to your treatment. We would advise you to book a consultation if you have any worries or wish to know more.
