Excess Sweating (Hyperhidrosis)
Toxin (the same used for anti-wrinkle injections) is injected into the skin of the armpits to block sweat gland activity. Hyperhidrosis is the medical term used for excessive sweating and this treatment is great for people who are conscious of the amount of sweat they produce. It is particularly popular with our male clients and gives them their confidence back to wear the shirt colours they haven’t dared to for years.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT IS A TOXIN?
Different brands of botulinum toxin are available in the UK and we only used the highest quality, prescription only, toxin. It paralyses muscles and reduce their action. Only very small volumes are used in cosmetic procedures, but larged volumes are used in medicine for other treatments like over active bladder and migraine.
HOW LONG DO HYPERHIDROSIS INJECTIONS LAST?
Longevity of your toxin varies greatly between patients, however a general rule is 3-6 months depending on the area treated. In the armpits these last between 6-24 months as the sweat gland activity increase slowly over time. Please note this is not a guarantee. Factors which may affect how long your treatment lasts includes active exercise regimes, increased sun exposure, heat therapies like sauna/steam, smoking, your metabolism and past medical history.
WHAT AFTER CARE TREATMENT DO YOU ADVISE?
With excess seating injections you can usually return to your normal activities immediately after your appointment. As mentioned you may have some pain, swelling and bruising, these can be reduced by applying cold compressed to the area and taking simple pain relief. Our general aftercare advice includes:
Avoid touching the skin and applying deodorant for at least 24 hours to reduce the risk of infection
Avoid vigorous exercise for 24 hours after
Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before and after treatments as this can increase risk of bleeding and bruising
You may wash your underarms lightly in the evening after treatment but 24 hours is preferred
Finally, always feel comfortable to contact Dr Diane if you have any worries after your treatment and arrange a complimentary review appointment
ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?
As with any medical treatment there is a possibility of side effects, although most of these are very rare.
As a needle is used you may experience bruising, bleeding, pain and swelling in the area treated. At times you may not be happy with the outcome of your treatment as it does not reduce the amount of sweat produced and in this case always contact us for a review. Other more serious side effects may occur, but as doctors we are highly trained to recognise these and act quickly. These include infection and allergic reaction. They will always be discussed at length in your appointments and Dr Diane is always available to support you if you are concerned after your procedure.
We understand this all sounds scary but please note these are rare. We work in a safe, clean environment with access to all emergency medicines. To reduce risks of infection we use an aseptic non-touch technique used in hospitals and double sterilise the skin prior to your treatment. We would advise you to book a consultation if you have any worries or wish to know more.
