Vitamin B12 Injections

B12 is a vitamin found in some food that is vital for red blood cells, healthy nervous system and DNA synthesis. The medical condition where patients cannot absorb B12 from food is called pernicious anaemia which results in low red cell production and can cause tiredness, lack of energy, pins and needles and many other general symptoms. These patients need injected B12 for a healthy, functioning body. Some people without pernicious anaemia can find improvement in energy levels, sleep and brain function. Please note these effects are not guaranteed.

FAQ

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?

As with any medical treatment there is a possibility of side effects, although most of these are very rare. B12 is found natural in foods and in the body and so the risk of reaction is low.

As a needle is used you may experience bruising, bleeding, pain and swelling in the area treated. At times you may not be happy with the outcome of your treatment as little improvement is noticed, in this case always contact us for a review. Other more serious side effects may occur, but as doctors we are highly trained to recognise these and act quickly. These include infection and allergic reaction. They will always be discussed at length in your appointments and Dr Diane is always available to support you if you are concerned after your procedure.

To reduce risks of infection we use an aseptic non-touch technique used in hospitals and double sterilise the skin prior to your treatment. We would advise you to book a consultation if you have any worries or wish to know more.

WHAT AFTER CARE TREATMENT DO YOU ADVISE?

You can usually return to your normal activities immediately after your appointment. As mentioned you may have some pain, swelling and bruising, these can be reduced by applying cold compressed to the area and taking simple pain relief. Our general aftercare advice includes:

  • Avoid touching the skin for at least 4 hours to reduce the risk of infection

  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before and after treatments as this can increase risk of bleeding and bruising

Finally always feel comfortable to contact Dr Diane if you have any worries after your treatment and arrange a complimentary review appointment
